What is a low MAP? Anything under 60 mm Hg is usually considered a low MAP. It indicates that your blood may not be reaching your major organs. Without blood and nutrients, the tissue of these organs begins to die, leading to permanent organ damage.

As a single value less than 70 mmHg or a series of successive measurements trending downward toward 70 mmHg, MAP provides an objective assessment of hypotension that may precede hemodynamic decompensation.

The equation ?MAP ? RAP = CO × TPR? is used to derive mean arterial pressure (MAP), where RAP is right arterial pressure, CO is cardiac output, and TPR is total peripheral resistance. Since RAP is very small, MAP (mm Hg) is the product of CO (liters per minute) and total peripheral resistance (mm Hg/liter/minute).

A normal MAP is between 70 and 100 mmHg. If the MAP drops below 60 mmHg, there is a concern there won't be enough pressure to perfuse vital organs including the brain. If the MAP is above 100 mmHg, the patient may be experiencing a high artery pressure.

The mean arterial pressure, in an analogous manner to electricity (refer to Ohm's law, page 28), is based upon the relationship between pressure (V), flow (I) and resistance (R) (V = I × R). As CVP is usually near to 0 mmHg, the equation is often simplified to: MAP = CO × SVR.

In physiological blood pressure values (120/80 mmHg) the mean arterial pressure value is 93,3 mmHg. For an accurate calculation, it would be necessary to know the detailed course of arterial pressure values during the entire cardiac cycle. This condition is partially only met during invasive measurements.

MAP = CO ? SVR ? or ? MAP = SV ? HR ? SVR . If SVR is stable, it is obvious that CO is proportional to MAP. Consequently, MAP can be used to evaluate CO and tissue perfusion. That is why some studies revealed that an MAP of about 60 mmHg was the critical low limit of organ perfusion.

Ideal blood pressure is considered to be between 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg. high blood pressure is considered to be 140/90mmHg or higher.
