Generally, scale is a form of size. Map or cartographic scale is the ratio of a distance on Earth compared to the same distance on a map.

The easiest way to calculate the scale for your map is to convert the dimensions of your document to miles or kilometers. So if you decide that an inch is equal to 100 miles, then a document 10 inches long would be 1,000 miles across.

Map resolution refers to the level of detail and accuracy in a map. In other words, map resolution is how finely the map is divided into small units, such as pixels or vector data, and how accurately those units represent the real world.

The ground resolution of your map display grid cells will depend on the scale of your map. In the simple case of a square cell digital elevation model (DEM), such 30m x 30m UTM grid cells, the optimal ground dimensions of the pixels on the map should be the same (or larger) than the DEM spatial resolution.

Each pixel is 30 meters on a size (an area of 900 square meters). You double that to get four pixels (two rows and two columns) with a resolution of 60 meters on a size (an area of 3600 square meters). Then you multiply that 60 meter resolution by 1000 to get a map scale of 60,000.

The Resolution referred in GIS is also called Ground Resolution or Spatial Resolution. It refers to the actual ground size (meter) that a pixel represents. The map scale refers to the proportion between the map distance of measurement target and the ground distance.

In other words, map resolution is how finely the map is divided into small units, such as pixels or vector data, and how accurately those units represent the real world. For example, a map with a high resolution would have more detail and accuracy than a map with a low resolution.
