Route maps have four components: Sequence number - Dictates the processing order of the route map. Conditional matching criterion - Identifies prefix characteristics (network, BGP path attribute, next hop, and so on) for a specific sequence. Processing action - Permits or denies the prefix.

A route map lets you match certain routes and set various parameters of the matching routes. The route-map command merely defines the list; the match command specifies which routes the map should match (something like an access list); and a number of set commands specify what to do with the matching routes.

A route map defines which of the routes from the specified routing protocol are allowed to be redistributed into the target routing process. of ACL or route maps consists of a list scan, in a predetermined order, and an evaluation of the criteria of each statement that matches.

As with access-lists, route-maps are organized as a sequential set of rules or statements, each with a permit or deny condition. However, access-lists can merely permit or deny traffic, while a route-map can additionally modify or perform a specific action on traffic.

Route Map. The route map feature provides a set of rules to control route redistribution. Before a route is redistributed from one routing domain to another, it is checked against a set of rules. If a rule matches, permit or deny access control is applited to the route.

To create a route-map, use the route-map command in global configuration mode. permit | deny : Specify permit or deny. Meaning depends on the purpose of the route map. <map-tag> can be used to specify the name of the route-map.

Route maps will process in a certain order: Sequence, conditional match criteria, action, and then optional action. If there is a deny statement within the match component, they are isolated from the sequence actions permit or deny.
