Text Mapping is a practical, tactile reading technique which allows you to dissect a piece of writing from beginning to end. This technique tends to work best for journal articles, chapters of books and shorter documents; whole books are probably not suited to this method.

So, what is mapping? It is a review that seeks to identify, not results, but linkages. Mapping focuses on characteristics such as where the activity took place, where the funding came from, and in what journal or other medium it was presented.

So, how exactly does text mapping work? Basically, take the text, or material being studied, and tape the pages together so they can be laid out like a scroll. From here, you will use highlighters or colored pencils to map the text by marking what information is relevant to your reading/writing purpose.

All maps, images, and graphs should be uniquely and sequentially referenced with figure numbers. Each figure reference should appear in the text as Figure 1, Figure 2, and so forth ing to the number of figures you use. The location of a specific figure should follow the first mention of the figure in the text.

Story maps typically involve placing a central idea at the center of a paper, drawing a circle around it, then making several branches that connect to related ideas. From there, additional branches can allow you to add ideas to your initial concept further.
