A symlink points to a hard link. Symlinks are broken if either the symlink or the hard link that it points to are moved.

Replace myfile with the name of the symbolic link. The ln command then creates the symbolic link. After you've made the symbolic link, you can perform an operation on or execute myfile , just as you could with the source_file . You can use normal file management commands (for example, cp , rm ) on the symbolic link.

Use the -s option to create a soft (symbolic) link. The -f option will force the command to overwrite a file that already exists. Source is the file or directory being linked to. Destination is the location to save the link ? if this is left blank, the symlink is stored in the current working directory.

Overwriting Symlinks If you try to create a symbolic link that already exists , the ln command will print an error message. To overwrite the destination path of the symlink, use the -f ( --force ) option.

Use either the unlink or rm commands to remove a symbolic link. If the command executes correctly, it displays no output. Notice the avoidance of the trailing slash (/) at the end of the symlink name. It is safer to use the unlink command since it cannot remove directories; however, it can remove files.

You use the ln command to create the links for the files and the -s option to specify that this will be a symbolic link. If you omit the -s option, then a hard link will be created instead.

There are three steps here: Convert the relative symlink to an absolute symlink. Relocate the symlink as necessary. Convert the relocated symlink back to relative.

A hard link can only refer to a file on the same file system. The inode and file data are permanently deleted when the number of hard links is zero. A soft link, sometimes called a symbolic link or symlink, points to the location or path of the original file. It works like a hyperlink on the internet.
