Excel's cell comments command helps you document your worksheets and make them easier to understand. Think of cell comments as sticky notes that you can attach to any cell. Cell comments appear whenever you point at the cell they're attached to.

If you need to discuss data with other people, then use a comment. Notes (formerly called "comments" in earlier versions of Excel) don't have a Reply box. Notes are just for adding annotations or reminders in cells. If you don't need to have a discussion about the data, then use a note.

To display an individual note, right-click the cell and click Show/Hide Note. To display all notes, go to the Review tab > Notes > Show All Notes. To move and resize any overlapping notes, right-click and select Edit Note, and the border of the note box will display sizing handles.

A red triangle in the upper-right corner of a cell indicates that a note is in the cell. If you rest the mouse pointer over the triangle, you can view the text of the note.

Convert Notes to Comments Open the Review tab and select the Notes drop-down menu. Choose "Convert to Comments." You'll see a pop-up message asking you to confirm this action. Select "Convert All Notes" to continue.
