The more dots/pixels the image contains, the sharper the image will print. When designing graphics for commercial printing purposes, your images should be 300 dpi. Web graphics and online photos are normally created at 72dpi. This low resolution is great for the web.

Generally, 300 DPI is great for small prints, while 600 DPI is amazing for large prints. If you're scanning documents or photos to be used on the web or in emails, 300 dpi is more than enough. If you want to print large photos or blow them up to poster size, 600 dpi will give you better results.

From pixels to points Screen resolution is given with dpi (dots per inch). A dot in the case of screens is a pixel. So, if screen resolution is 72 dpi, then there are 72 pixels (dots) in one inch of a line of pixels. If screen resolution is 96 dpi, then there are 96 pixels in an inch.

Image resolution is typically expressed as a horizontal x vertical measurement. So, an image resolution of 6000 x 4000 tells us that the image measures 6000 pixels in width and 4000 pixels in height. Multiplying the two figures together gives us the second way this is commonly stated, namely as megapixels.

Because it is a reproduction in real size of the images, it requires more DPI than require PPI for the same file. 300DPI for example, equals 118.11 PPI.

Two images with the same pixel value (let's say, 1000 pixels wide) will print at very different sizes depending on the set DPI. That image at 72 DPI will be 13.88 inches wide, while that same image at 300 DPI will be 3.33 inches wide.

PPI and DPI are different ? the first is for digital, the second is for print. 72 pixels per inch is the standard for online use, typically allowing for a smooth loading time and a good quality visual. 300 dots per inch meanwhile is the standard for high-quality print images.
