As the photographer you benefit from a print release by: Clients cannot violate your copyright by editing/transforming your images in any capacity. Prevents commercial use without your permission. Preserves the integrity of your art, and the industry.

In this situation, you need to obtain a signed photo release form from the subject of the photo (or, in the case of a minor, the parent or guardian) or the owner of the pet or property featured in the images. A photo release does not give you permission to take the photo, but rather to publish it.

Print Release ? limited release of a super small portion of the copyright. This allows you, the client, to print for personal use while preserving the rights of the Photographer (me!). Copyright Release ? releases the copyright from me, the photographer, to you, the client. I do not do this.

There should be something offered in return?called a consideration, in legal terms?so that the photo release is a fair, two-way street. Similarly, if you're signing over your rights to your images in a media release form, there should be some form of compensation.
