Release numbers are used to record the preauthorized order numbers for a product being delivered. Release numbers specify the order number, quantity, and status.

Generally speaking, a Version is whenever the makers feel like tagging it as some point they may want to refer to, while a Release is something that gets, well, released. A Version may be for purely internal purposes. Here's a bit of difference in tabulated format.

As a standard practice, the numbers give the following information: First Number: This is the major release number and indicates major incompatible changes or additions to the product. Second Number: This is the minor release number and indicates minor changes to the product, or improvements to a functionality.

Typically, a major release will supersede previous versions of the software. Also known as updates. A minor release edits the current version in a small way ? usually to enhance existing functions. (Or, sometimes, to add lesser new features.)

Reading version numbers The leftmost number (1) is called the major version. The middle number (2) is called the minor version. The rightmost number (3) is called the revision but it may also be referred to as a "point release" or "subminor version".

The version number is increased by one digit, depending on the type of changes made in the new versioning. For example, software version 1.3. 1 means that the software is in its first major version, with three additional functionalities added, and one patch fix implemented.
