Click the References tab. Don't click Insert Footnote, as you did before. Instead, click the Footnotes group's dialog launcher. In the resulting dialog, choose Below text from the Footnotes dropdown (Figure D), and click Insert.

Footnotes appear at the bottom of the page and endnotes come at the end of the document. A number or symbol on the footnote or endnote matches up with a reference mark in the document. Click where you want to reference to the footnote or endnote. On the References tab, select Insert Footnote or Insert Endnote.

The \footnote command \footnote[number]{text for footnote} : This form of the command uses the optional value number to create the superscript footnote marker; it also inserts the corresponding footnote at the bottom of the page, containing the identifying footnote marker ( number ) and text for footnote .

Footnotes are a common feature in many types of documents. In some types of documents, you may actually need footnotes within footnotes, such that a footnote can be footnoted, with the "sub footnote" appearing in the regular flow of the main footnotes.
