The plot used in fictions can be differentiated into four types: linear, episodic, parallel, and flashback. The most common plot employed in short stories is the linear plot. Some short stories, though quite rarely, also use flashback plot.

Scenes include events, character(s) and setting. Plot, therefore, shows the cause and effect of these things put together. The plot outline is a rough sketch of this cause and effect made by the scenes to lay out a "solid backbone and structure" to show why and how things happened as they did.

Plot "forms" are the instructions for what shapes to actually paint on the plotting surface given some positional data from a table. The most obvious (Mark) is simply to plot a marker with a fixed size and shape at each data position.
