L with bar (capital ?, lower case ?) is a Latin letter L with a bar diacritic. It appears in the alphabet of the Venetian language, and in its capital form it is used in the Saanich orthography created by Dave Elliott in 1978. In Unicode, both the capital and lower case are in the Latin Extended-B block.

There was no official "standard" for Polish orthography (or, for that matter, the Polish language) until the 18th century. At this point, the letter "w" had already come to mean /v/ in German, due to a 17th-century phonological change ([w] ? [?] ? [v]).

Polish L is similar to English L, but ? sounds like English w. Originally, there was an opposition between palatal and non-palatal L in Polish, but then the former became just L and the latter became w (spelled ?).

In Polish, ??? is used to distinguish the historical dark (velarized) L [?] from clear L [l]. The Polish ??? now sounds the same as the English ?W?, [w] as in water (except for older speakers in some eastern dialects where it still sounds velarized).

?q?, ?v?, and ?x?, which are used only in foreign words, are usually absent from the Polish alphabet. However, prior to the standardization of Polish spelling, ?x? was sometimes used in place of ?ks?.

The diacritics used in the Polish alphabet are the kreska (graphically similar to the acute accent) in the letters ?, ?, o, ?, ?; the kreska uko?na (stroke) in the letter ?; the kropka (overdot) in the letter ?; and the ogonek ("little tail") in the letters ?, ?.

It was used up to the nineteenth century in Britain and continues to be familiar in Germany. In Middle High German (and possibly already in late Old High German), the West Germanic phoneme /w/ became realized as [v]; this is why, today, the German ?w? represents that sound.
