A position line or Line of Position ? LOP is a line that is plotted on the chart on which the boat position lies. It might also be a circle so it could then be called a position circle. It is used to confirm your position on the chart. You need two or three lines intersecting to get a confirmed fix.

Line of Position (LOP) - A line indicating a series of possible positions of an observer, determined by observation or measurement. Local Hour Angle (LHA) - The angular distance west of the local celestial meridian measured westward from the local celestial meridian through 360°.

The position line is a line on the surface on the earth which you can use to determine the location of a vessel. On a position line the ranges, bearings and distance can be found. Range is when two landmarks form a line, for example when a lighthouse is aligned with a mountaintop or a hill.

At noon, the sun bears due south. The line of position at noon, therefore, is a line of latitude perpendicular to the local meridian. At any other time of day, the direction of the sun will be some other compass bearing, or azimuth, perpendicular to which will be your line of position.

This is done by using the dead reckoning plot. First, we measure the distance between the two DR positions and draw a construction line, next draw a parallel line through the EP. Now, using the parallel rules we advance the first LOP along this construction line over the distance we measured.
