Stone columns, also known as granular piles, consist of stone aggregates compacted into a vertical hole. Generally, the size of aggregate used is 20mm to 75mm and the depth of hole is about 15m to 20m with the diameter of 0.6m to 1.0m.

Rammed columns are placed by first generating a pre-bored hole which is afterwards filled with a compacted material in many layers as opposed to vibrated columns which employ a vibratory probe to generate an opening for granular fill placement by either the displacement or the replacement method.

How are stone columns constructed? Stone columns are constructed by experienced contractors using specialist equipment. The construction uses an excavator with a vibrating probe to feed stone into the ground, forming a vertical column of stone.

Some stone column rigs feed stone into the ground through the vibrating probe, exiting at the bottom, and other rigs require the stone to be fed in from the ground surface down the vertical hole in the ground. Both types use a vibrating probe that densifies the surrounding soils to help feed the stone into the ground.

The preferred effective spacing between stone columns should be between 2 to 3 times the diameter of stone columns as too close a spacing i.e. less than 2 times the diameter is not feasible from construction point of view.

Stone columns- Top Feed Method It requires the use of a free hanging vibrolance that penetrates the ground thanks to the lateral vibrations emitted by its tip. During penetration, the soil is laterally compacted by displacement, allowing the vibrolance to create the hole that will contain the stone column.
