Preparing Formula at the Day care Keep the bottle clean and sanitised. Add the right amount boiled water to each bottle. Tightly seal and store it in a refrigerator until it is ready to be used at the day care. Use a storage container that has sections and fill each section with the correct amount of formula.

Make sure that water is at least 70°C to kill any bacteria in the formula powder when you make up a feed (see page 13). Once you have made up the formula with boiled water, it will be safe to cool the formula before giving it to your baby.

I would get three sets of bottles if possible ? one to send to daycare, one to pump into, and one to wash. If necessary, you can do two sets and have the wash/pump into be the same, but then you may have to pack up bottles that haven't fully dried.

The majority prefer premade bottles, so formula mix-ups don't happen. But it's essential to understand their expectations. If they are preparing the bottle at the center, ensure your daycare provider is preparing and warming the bottles as advised on the label itself.

Using hot water, place bottles in the containers provided. Get the required bottle/bottles out of the fridge and place them in the containers in the sink area. After three minutes, shake the bottle to ensure even heat distribution. Check temperature by dropping a little of the milk onto your wrist.

Distilled or purified water can be used without boiling it. All other water should be boiled then cooled as described below. This includes all other bottled water and all tap water. Do NOT use well water.

Powdered infant formula milk is not sterile. Even though tins and packets of milk powder are sealed, they can still contain bacteria. Water that hasn't been boiled can also contain bacteria. Formula therefore needs to be made up with water hot enough to kill the bacteria, which is at least 70 degrees C.
