Protect Table Paper For Free

Polyurethane finishes may be right for your project. These finishes are great for a table that is likely to experience a lot of potential stains or liquids, such as a family dining room table, or bar top. For outdoor use, get a polyurethane with uv protection.

Fiona Coulter I use the cheap but sturdy blue paper drop cloths from the hardware store. One side is more plastic and the other side more paper like. I use the plastic side for clay and the paper side for any painting and drape them over the entire table grouping (8) desks. Works like a charm and lasts a long time.

Assuming that the table was one that would get a lot of use (things being put on top and removed) I would apply a thin coat of Zinsser Seal Coat. That is dewaxed shellac. Then I would wipe on about 3 or 4 coats of General Finishes Arm-R-Seal following the directions on the can.

Varnishes create a hard barrier that acts as a first line of defense. This makes the clean up process much easier as there's already a surface layer to protect the natural wood. Depending on the type of finish of your dining table, you can also consider using wax to protect the wood and add an extra layer of shine.

There are three surefire ways to waterproof your wood for years to come. Use linseed or Tung oil to create a beautiful and protective hand-rubbed finish. Seal the wood with a coating of polyurethane, varnish, or lacquer. Finish and waterproof wood simultaneously with a stain-sealant combo.

The key to preventing scratches is fairly intuitive. Simply be sure to pick up objects rather than slide them across the table. Anything from vases, dishes, or glasses can potentially leave an unsightly scratch. If you have a habit of tossing your keys onto the table, try using a small, decorative dish instead.

Polycrylic topcoats are my sealer of choice for most projects, as they don't tend to yellow as often as polyurethane. Clear furniture wax can also be used to seal natural wood projects. Furniture wax provides a soft, silky finish to a piece, which can be lovely.
