Publishing under a pseudonym is no problem with most self-publishing services and classic book publishers. However, it is important that you do not violate any naming rights and do not choose a pen name that already exists on the book market.

The law does not prohibit the use of preferred names or nicknames in other purposes. The AP Stylebook is often our go-to guide on how to handle such situations. It instructs writers to use a person's preferred name and pronouns. In some cases, they/them/their are acceptable as singular gender-neutral pronouns.

Nicknames: When introducing someone by both a proper name and a nickname, put the nickname in quotes: Jake ?The Snake? Smith. You don't need to use quotes if it's a common shortening of a name, like Jake instead of Jacob. Just use the name they prefer to be called.

Nicknames should be set off in quotes rather than parentheses and appear after the middle initial or middle name. If a nickname is given as initials, like James ?D.J.? Samuels, do not insert space between nickname letters.

The @, aka (short for also known as) and brackets indicates that person is also known by or has used a different name. Jane Alison Smith @ Jones, Jane Alison Smith aka Jones, or Jane Alison Smith (Jones) generally means Jane has used both the surname Smith as well as Jones.

Thus, when the nickname is used as part of the full name, we enclose the nickname in quotation marks: Frederico ?Fredo? Corleone. But when the nickname is used alone, quotation marks are omitted.

Most stylebooks specify placing the nickname after the forename and enclosing it in quotation marks. Some stylebooks say parentheses may be used instead. Examples of the preferred form: General James "Mad Dog" Mattis, Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant, Prime Minister Margaret "Iron Lady" Thatcher.
