Quote Hide Option Field For Free

A hidden attribute on an <option> tag hides the option. Although the option is not visible, its position on the page is maintained.

The disabled attribute can be set to keep a user from selecting the option until some other condition has been met (like selecting a checkbox, etc.). Then, a JavaScript is required to remove the disabled value, and make the option selectable.

You have to implement two methods for hiding. display: none works for FF, but not Chrome or IE. So the second method is wrapping the <option> in a <span> with display: none . FF won't do it (technically invalid HTML, per the spec) but Chrome and IE will and it will hide the option.
