Redacted, a fairly common practice in legal documents, refers to the process of editing a document to conceal or remove confidential information before disclosure or publication. Redacting personal data in documents is important to avoid identity theft.

Select the text that needs to be redacted. You can do this by using the mouse to highlight the text, or by using keyboard shortcuts such as "Ctrl + A" to select all the text in a document. Use the formatting tools in your word processor to obscure or remove the selected text.

Open a PDF in Preview, then click the Markup button (top right), then click the Redact button (top left). You can also choose Tools > Redact, to activate the redaction tool, without engaging Markup. When you click the Redact button, Preview presents a dialog explaining what this does.

Cut-out (literally) all the text to be redacted and properly dispose of (shred) the clippings. This method will always be 100% effective. Use opaque (100% impenetrable by light; neither transparent nor translucent) tape or paper to cover over the sections to be redacted.

If you have a digital copy of your bank statement in PDF format, you can use a PDF editor such as Adobe Acrobat to redact your information. Open the PDF file in the editor, select the text or images you want to redact and use the redaction tool to black out or remove the selected information.

How to redact a PDF on a Mac using Preview. Open your PDF in Preview. Click the Markup icon on the top right. Click the Redact button on the top left. It looks like a filled in square. Read the reminder in the dialog box, save a copy of your PDF, and click OK. Select your text to have it automatically redacted.
