When you're the only author or signer, redacting documents in Adobe Acrobat is relatively straightforward. You can check the security settings by navigating to Files > Properties > Security. To start editing, you can clear your signature from the document and redact it freely.

Redacted, a fairly common practice in legal documents, refers to the process of editing a document to conceal or remove confidential information before disclosure or publication. Redacting personal data in documents is important to avoid identity theft.

Redact sensitive content (Acrobat Pro) Choose Tools > Redact. On the Edit menu, choose Redact Text & Images. Select the text or image in a PDF, right-click, and select Redact. Select the text or image in a PDF, choose Redact in the floating context-menu.

If you received a PDF digitally signed by others, you can sign it, but can't edit it. While signing a PDF, if the signer chooses to lock the document after signing, the document becomes read-only for everyone, including the signer.

PDFs have security settings which an author turns on. PDF Security settings prevents redaction. Check Adobe Acrobat Pro DC - FILE > PROPERTIES > SECURITY. If security settings are enabled, contact author to send a new PDF with security settings disabled.

To do this, navigate to Tools and select Redact > Redact Text & Images > Find Text & Redact. This makes it easy to identify and then black out that content throughout the document. You can also specify general patterns, such as phone, Social Security, or credit card numbers.
