Regulate Footnote Article For Free

Footnotes are listed at the bottom of the page on which a citation is made. A numeral is placed in the text to indicate the cited work and again at the bottom of the page in front of the footnote. A footnote lists the author, title and details of publication, in that order.

Rule 10.9(a): "Rule of Five" for Cases. A short form for a case may only be used if the case is already cited (a) in the same footnote or (b) is cited in either full or short form in one of the preceding five footnotes.

The abbreviation ibid (meaning 'in the same place') can be used to repeat a citation in the immediately preceding footnote. Never italicize or capitalise ibid. In the above example, ibid is followed by a page number (6), which means 'in the same work, but this time on page 6'.

To change the formatting of the footnote numbers, select the Footnotes Reference Style. If you want to change the formatting of the footnote text at the bottom of the page, select the Footnote Text Style. Click Modify, and then change the formatting options (font, size, and so on).

Rule of 5 (Rule 10.9(a)) This Rule generally applies to law review articles because it applies when you're using footnotes. This Rule means that you need a new full cite if the case has not been cited in any form in the preceding 5 footnotes. Id. counts.
