Network Time Protocol (NTP) is an internet protocol used to synchronize with computer clock time sources in a network. It belongs to and is one of the oldest parts of the TCP/IP suite. The term NTP applies to both the protocol and the client-server programs that run on computers.

The best way to ensure that network times are accurate, consistent, and secure is to run your own NTP server. This solution doesn't require you to reconfigure routers or firewalls to allow data from public time servers into your network.

In most cases it's best to use pool.ntp.org to find an NTP server (or 0.pool.ntp.org, 1.pool.ntp.org, etc if you need multiple server names). With three servers, you have the minimum number of time sources needed to allow ntpd to dectect if one time source is a "falseticker". However ntpd will then be in the position of choosing from the two remaining sources. This configuration provides no redundancy.
