The first stages of the cell cycle involve cell growth, then replication of DNA . The single strand of DNA that makes up each chromosome produces an exact copy of itself. All of the organelles inside the cell are also copied.

The cellular cycle of eukaryotic cells consists of four phases: G1 phase, S phase, G2 phase and M phase. Cells increase in size during G1 phase, which is followed by DNA replication in S phase. Protein synthesis and the production of microtubules occurs during G2 phase, which is then followed by mitosis.

G2 phase is a period of rapid cell growth and protein synthesis during which the cell prepares itself for mitosis. Curiously, G2 phase is not a necessary part of the cell cycle, as some cell types (particularly young Xenopus embryos and some cancers) proceed directly from DNA replication to mitosis.

During mitosis, the cell breaks apart into two identical cells. Each of the two new cells has the same DNA and number of chromosomes as the parent cell. In other words, the main function of mitosis is nuclear division which relies on the process of DNA replication.
