One line pair is a black line and a white line next to each other in the same orientation and with the same width. If you have 100 LP/mm resolution of a lens, this means that one find 100 black and 100 white lines within 1 mm projected on the film (or sensor).

Line pairs equal twice the amount of lines. For example 100 line pairs equal 200 lines. Now we have to find out the width of one of these lines, when that amount of lines fills one millimeter = 1000 micrometers. We do this by dividing 1000 micrometers by the number of lines.

So, an image resolution of 6000 x 4000 tells us that the image measures 6000 pixels in width and 4000 pixels in height. Multiplying the two figures together gives us the second way this is commonly stated, namely as megapixels. 6000 x 4000 equals 24,000,000, which is more commonly written as 24 megapixels (MP).

The resolution pixel count measurement is quantified for a specific unit of length. In the USA this unit is usually an inch and the measurement is called 'pixels per inch' (ppi) or 'dots per inch' (dpi), although dpi more accurately refers to the resolution of printing devices.

How is resolution measured? The resolution of a digital image is measured using its pixels; specifically in pixels per inch (PPI). For printing, picture resolution is measured by dots per inch (DPI), referring to the tiny droplets of ink that printers create.

Camera pixel size limited resolution (in lp/mm) = 1000/(2 x pixel-size-in-?m) = 500/(pixel-size-in-?m). For example, a camera that is based on Sony CMOS Pregius Gen2 imagers such as the IMX264 or IMX304 with a pixel size of 3.45?m has the capability of resolving 500/3.45 = 145 lp/mm.
