Setting breakpoints A breakpoint is like a stop sign in your code -- whenever gdb gets to a breakpoint it halts execution of your program and allows you to examine it. To set breakpoints, type "break [filename]:[linenumber]". For example, if you wanted to set a breakpoint at line 55 of main.

Visual Studio projects have separate release and debug configurations for your program. You build the debug version for debugging and the release version for the final release distribution. In debug configuration, your program compiles with full symbolic debug information and no optimization.

For example, if a function is simple and only called once, the compiler can inline the function in release mode. Debug mode doesn't have these kind of optimization and is designed for debugging your code. You can then put a breakpoint on that int declaration line, and it'll be hit, even in release mode.

You can debug a release build of an application.
