Cite the federal constitution by "U.S." or the abbreviated name of the state. Abbreviated name of Constitution art. Article number in Roman numerals. § Section number.

The first footnote for a source should contain full bibliographic information: publication information for the work plus the page number (examples a, below). Subsequent footnotes should follow an abbreviated style (examples b).

In-text citations to legal documents are presented as footnotes; see below for an example citation to the Charter: Citation with pinpoint (e.g., "s 7"): Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, s 7, Part 1 of the Constitution Act, 1982, being Schedule B to the Canada Act 1982 (UK), 1982, c 11 a.

' The year of enactment should be followed by a comma and then the article cited. In the main text of the paper, the complete word 'Article' is to be used when referring to the Constitution and the sub-clause to articles must be italicized: for e.g., Article 19(1)(a). Footnotes appear at the bottom, or foot, of the page. They begin two double spaces below the text. Footnotes are single spaced, but you must double space between them. If a note continues on the next page, add a solid line across that page two spaces below the text and continue the note two spaces below the line.

If you are citing a specific part or article of the U.S. Constitution, you must cite it in the text of the paper using an in-text parenthetical reference using the abbreviations used in "Bluebook Style." For example: In 1920, Suffragettes succeeding in winning the right for women to vote (U. S. Const. amend. XIX).

The footnote/endnote begins with the same superscript number as the one that appears in the paper and is followed by a period. Footnotes/endnotes always include a specific page number or numbers where the cited information can be found. The first footnote/endnote to a source provides the full publishing information.
