If your footnotes are mostly quite short, and especially if they are few, you may never see the Footnote Continuation Separator. It is used when a footnote is too long to fit on the page and must be continued on the following page.

Click where you want to add the footnote. Click Insert > Insert Footnote. Word inserts a reference mark in the text and adds the footnote mark at the bottom of the page. Type the footnote text.

If a footnote does not fit in the available space, part of it may be moved to the next page automatically. The amount of space available depends on the amount of text on the page, the margin settings, and the number and length of the footnotes.

Click View footnote area or View endnote area, and then click OK. In the note pane, click Footnote Continuation Notice or Endnote Continuation Notice. In the note pane, type the text you want to use for the continuation notice ? for example, type Endnotes continued on the next page.
