The length of the antenna required to transmit a signal is related to the wavelength. Directly transmitting frequencies in the audio range would have long wavelengths requiring a humongous antenna and lots of amplification.

You're referring to MHz, the frequency band that reserved for public broadcast FM radio, the band varies between countries but it's usually 86 - 108MHz. Below this is reserved for television stations. Radio waves would interfere with television waves, hampering communications. However, the FCC will allow radio broadcasts to produce transmissions lower than 88.1 MHz if the carrier wave does not go farther than about 60 meters.
