Personal use means non-commercial use of the Media for display on personal websites and computers, or making image prints or video copies for personal use.

Photographers (rights holders) give an image license to their clients to outline how the given work can be used. From specifying time duration to deciding on platform usage, the license grants different rights to the party that wishes to use the image.

You send a letter to the holder asking for permission and stating how you intend to use the image. The holder sends a letter back granting you permission. Your request should be as specific as possible in describing the intended use of the image.

Stock photos for commercial use can be placed on websites and in marketing materials and editorial work ? some stock photos can only be used for editorial purposes. The one caveat is that they cannot be used in materials related to illegal or morally sensitive areas, nor can they be resold or distributed.

Images licensed under the CC0 are free from copyright restrictions. This means you can copy, modify and distribute the work, even for commercial purposes, all without asking permission. Although CC0 doesn't legally require users to cite the source, it is often appreciated (and the right thing to do).

When you get a photo license, it means you have obtained permission to use a photo in a certain manner. It doesn't mean that you own the image outright, however, just that you may use the image for a certain period of time.

Put the license in writing Some photographers grant exclusive licenses so that only the licensee has the right to use their photograph in a certain way or for a certain time. Exclusive licenses must be in writing. You can grant non-exclusive licenses orally, but it's best to put all licenses in writing.
