A ZIP Code is the postal code used by the United States Postal Service, which always writes ZIP with capital letters. ZIP is an acronym for the Zone Improvement Plan, but was also meant to suggest that mail travels more efficiently (and therefore faster) when senders use it.

The standard ZIP code notation used by the United States Postal service uses five digits to identify a delivery area. An example of a standard US ZIP code is 90210.

If you want to improve the chances that the letter will make it to its destination quickly, you should use the five-digit ZIP code plus the four additional numbers that are specific to the area. To format, write the ZIP code with a hyphen afterward and then the four additional numbers will immediately follow that.

To create a personal Zip, a postal customer would go to a postal web site, authenticate who they are, much as they do today to sign up for Informed Delivery, and provide their current address and, optionally, email address. The system would provide them their own 11 (or 12) digit Personal Zip Code.
