In America, the date is formally written in month/day/year form. Thus, ?January 1, 2011? is widely considered to be correct. In formal usage, it is not appropriate to omit the year, or to use a purely numerical form of the date.

In the UK we use DD/MM/YYYY (although sometimes the year is simplified to the final two digits, e.g. 2019 is written 19). Additionally, when writing out the date, we use the same order and use ordinals, e.g. the 1st of January 2019.

Spell out the day, month, and year for highly formal invitations. Even if you follow American English conventions, include the day first when you spell out each piece of information.
