A footnote is indicated with a superscript numeral (like this1) within the text that corresponds to the same numeral at the bottom of the page, which is followed by the reference or additional information. The footnote should be included directly following the text it pertains to, usually after any punctuation.

The footnote contains the number of the citation followed by a period and then the citation itself. The citation always includes the author's name and the title of the text, and it always ends with a period. Full notes also include all the relevant publication information in parentheses (which varies by source type).

Footnotes & Endnotes Click the References tab. 3.In the Footnotes group, choose Insert Footnote. This inserts the superscript number in the text and then moves you to the bottom of the page. Type the footnote and add any formatting. To return to where you were in the document, press the keyboard shortcut Shift+5.

Footnotes appear at the bottom, or foot, of the page. They begin two double spaces below the text. Footnotes are single spaced, but you must double space between them. If a note continues on the next page, add a solid line across that page two spaces below the text and continue the note two spaces below the line.

In your document, click where you want to insert the note reference mark. On the Insert menu, click Footnote. Under Location, click Footnotes or Endnotes, and then on the Footnotes or Endnotes pop-up menu, click the location that you want. Under Format, select the numbering options that you want, and then click Insert.

Change your footnote formatting. Click the Menu button in the bottom right-corner of the "Footnotes" section to open it. Click Symbol... to choose a symbol from the Symbol menu. You can choose any character from any font, though the "Symbols" font will open by default.
