An indicia is an imprinted designation on mail that denotes postage payment, permit number and mailing classification. It usually looks something like this and is printed directly on the mail piece: PRSRT STD. U.S. Postage. PAID.

Permit imprint indicia can be used only as part of a commercial mailing that you bring to the Post Office?it cannot be used to send individual pieces of mail. Some companies print brochures with a permit indicia to use in a commercial mailing. Then they hand those same brochures out to customers.

Include a clear space of at least 3/8 inch around the entire indicia. 3.1 A permit imprint indicia on First-Class Mail or Priority Mail must show ?First-Class Mail? or ?Priority Mail? (or ?Priority?), as applicable; ?U.S. Postage Paid?; city and state; and permit number.

U.S. Standard Rate, known sometimes as Bulk Mail, offers lower postage rates but has a longer delivery time. Typically you can expect delivery in 10-14 days nationally and 4-6 days in California and the Southwest U.S. The USPS will not forward or return mail if the mailing address is incorrect.

The minimum size of the permit imprint is 1/2" square and not less than 6-point type. Use with automation or non-automation Standard Mail (formerly "Bulk Mail").

There is no standard font required when designing an indicia, however, it cannot be any smaller than 4 pt and you should stay away from fonts with serifs so that it is readable. Also, indicias must be placed in a clear area no smaller than ½? high by ½? wide, in the upper right hand corner of the envelope.

Permit imprint is the most popular and convenient way to pay for postage, especially for high volume mailings. Instead of using precanceled stamps or a postage meter, the mailer prints postage information in the upper right corner of the mailpiece.

The indicia must be placed in a clear area that is free from any other text, graphics or markings. The actual size of the indicia must be a minimum of one-half inch high by one-half inch wide. It must be placed no more than 1.5 inches below, or to the left of, the upper right hand corner of your postcard.

A commercial mail permit is a permit you must obtain before you qualify for bulk mail discounts on postage. A ?permit imprint? is something you use in place of a stamp to handle bulk mail postage payment (see below for more details).
