Any outstanding balance must be paid in full before switching carriers. How much you owe depends on a number of factors including payments left on devices, current account balance, billing promotions, and trade-in value of phones you may be willing to sell to the carrier.

Contact your mobile phone provider to tell them you want to cancel your contract. You can either call or send a free text, or email them. If you're still within contract, you'll need to pay any exit fees or buy-out the remainder of your contract, before you can leave.

Your provider has to give you 30 days' notice if they're putting up the price of your contract. You have the legal right to cancel the contract within those 30 days without having to pay a fee. Contact the company and say you're cancelling within the allowed 30 days' notice of a price increase.

If you exit your contract before the end of your minimum term, an early termination fee is applicable to the service. The early termination fee is a lump sum equivalent to the total of all the monthly charges due for the remainder of your minimum term.

Make sure your phone is paid off If you still owe on your phone, you'll need to pay it off before you can go from one cell provider to another. You also want to make sure you will not have any termination fees.
