On a computer that has the Windows operating system installed, the operating system stores a certificate locally on the computer in a storage location called the certificate store.

The default location to certificates is /etc/ssl/certs . This enables multiple services to use the same certificate without overly complicated file permissions. For applications that can be configured to use a CA certificate, you should also copy the /etc/ssl/certs/cacert.

A Windows public key infrastructure (PKI) saves certificates on the server that hosts the certification authority (CA) and on the local computer or device. CA storage is typically referred to as the certificate database, and local storage is known as the certificate store.

Certificates stored on the Windows 10 computer are located in the local machine certificate store. Windows 10 offers Certificate Manager as a certificate management tool for both computer and user certificates.

To do this, you create a certificate collection with the purpose X509 that contains the required certificates directly in the database. If necessary, you can create separate collections for different identity providers.

The certificate must be in either the local computer certificate store or the SQL Server service account certificate store. We recommend local computer certificate store as it avoids reconfiguring certificates with SQL Server startup account changes.
