The record books reveal that Robert Mathews, pitching for Philadelphia of the American Association, was the first to get four strike outs in a single inning. Ironically, two of the batters he fanned got on base.

A "strike" is called when the batter: Fails to swing at a pitch that crosses the plate in the strike zone, swings at a pitch and misses, hits the ball out of bounds with fewer than two strikes against them. Once they get 3 strikes they're out, and the next batter comes up to the plate.

Five players ? Chuck Finley, A. J. Burnett, Zack Greinke, Craig Kimbrel, and Tyler Glasnow ? have accomplished the feat more than once in their career; no player has ever struck out more than four batters in an inning.

The overall record for most strikeouts in a game is 21, by Tom Cheney of the Washington Senators against the Baltimore Orioles, over 16 innings on Sept. 12, 1962 (Washington won 2-1).
