The Standards Council of Canada also specifies this as the country's date format. The YYYY - MM - DD format is the only officially recommended method of writing a numeric date in Canada. The presence of the DD / MM / YY (most of the world) and MM / DD / YY (American) formats often results in misinterpretation.

In America, the date is formally written in month/day/year form. Thus, ?January 1, 2011? is widely considered to be correct. In formal usage, it is not appropriate to omit the year, or to use a purely numerical form of the date.

In written American English, the month of the date comes before the day and year. For example, Independence Day in the USA is on July 4th each year. In the year 2000 the date was 4/7/2000 in British English. In American English this is written 7/4/2000.

Words only In the most formal writing, such as contracts, invitations, plaques and presentation documents, it is usual to write out the entire date in words. Days and months are capitalized, but dates and years are not.

When writing numeral style dates, it should be written in the month/day/year date format. For example, it should be written as 12/31/2019 or 12/31/19. Numerical style dates shouldn't be written in formal writing.

Write out the month in full, and avoid using abbreviations or numerical formats. For example, the date may look like "31 January 2019" or "January 31, 2019." Don't write January as ?Jan? or ?01.? If you'd like, you may opt to write the date as "2019 January 31."

When writing the date in a formal letter , you should write it in full with no abbreviations, for example, "December 12, 2019." Avoid abbreviating the month or using the numerical format "12-12-2019."
