The three-act structure is a narrative model that separates stories into three distinct sections or acts. Act I is the setup or exposition. This establishes the main characters and their goals. Act II raises the stakes culminating in the confrontation between the hero and the villain. Act III resolves the story.

The three-act structure is a model used in narrative fiction that divides a story into three parts (acts), often called the Setup, the Confrontation, and the Resolution. It was popularized by Syd Field in his 1979 book Screenplay: The Foundations of Screenwriting.

Just like the script for a fiction film, narrative, structure, character and plot are the essential components of your documentary film. Your storyline will usually follow a three-act structure, too: setup, conflict and climax.

Understanding the Three-Act Documentary Structure Each Act contains two essential plot points: Act One includes the Opening and the Inciting Incident. Act Two comprises the First Act Break and the Midpoint. Act Three involves the Second Act Break and the Resolution/Climax.

One-hour shows are formatted like features, except for the act breaks. You begin and end them as you would a sitcom, however there are no scene breaks. Each page equals about a minute of screen time and script lengths usually fall between 53-60 pages.
