To create a numbered list, use the numbered list function of your word-processing program. This will automatically indent the list as well. Select the option for an Arabic numeral followed by a period but not enclosed in or followed by parentheses.

To choose a format or to control the starting number, go to Header & Footer > Page Number > Format Page Numbers. To change the numbering style, select a different style in Number format.

Numbers can be written either as words (e.g., one hundred) or numerals (e.g., 100). In this article we follow the guidelines of APA Style, one of the most common style guides used in academic writing. In general, words should be used for numbers from zero through nine, and numerals should be used from 10 onwards.

As for percentages specifically, APA has this to say: 1. Use the percent symbol after any number expressed as a numeral. For example: 12%. In APA style, numbers greater than nine are expressed as numerals and use the percent symbol.

The general rule governing APA style on the use of numbers is to use figures to express numbers 10 and above and words to express numbers below 10" (APA, 2001, p. 122). This general rule applies to cardinal numbers (whole counting numbers) and their ordinal counterparts (first through ninth) (128).

Treat ordinal numbers (3rd, fourth) the same way as other numbers, using the guidelines above. You may use a superscript or not (1st, 1st), but you should maintain the same usage throughout your paper.
