They might be asking because you either don't have a post high school degree or the hiring manager is grasping for any reason to reject your application.

Background verification is a process many organizations carry out in order to verify the information provided by the candidate during hiring. Address verification: The company may verify the candidate's current and previous addresses to ensure they are accurate.
