Settlement date accounting is an accounting method that accountants may use when recording financial exchange transactions in the company's general ledger. Under this method, a transaction is recorded on the "books" at the point in time when the given transaction has been fulfilled.

The settlement date is the date a buyer purchases a coupon, such as a bond. The maturity date is the date when a coupon expires. For example, suppose a 30-year bond is issued on January 1, 2008, and is purchased by a buyer six months later.

Bonds and stocks are settled within two business days, whereas Treasury bills and bonds are settled within the next business day. Where the period between the transaction date and the settlement date falls on a holiday or weekend, the waiting period can increase substantially.

On February 15, 2023, the Securities and Exchange Commission (the "Commission") adopted a rule amendment to shorten the standard settlement cycle for most routine securities trades from two business days after the trade date to one business day after the trade date (or from "T+2" to "T+1" in common parlance).

Since a trade held less than two days in a cash account requires settled funds to avoid a good faith violation, it may become necessary to wait at least two days between trades so that the day trades or short-term trades may be executed using settled funds only.
