1 Spectacle Island Easily the best settlement in the game is this massive private island. Once the beacon is turned on, it wards off Mirelurks, and power is supplied by a ship generator. It also boasts the largest amount of square footage and has a decent height limit, giving lots of creative potential.

Unlockable items and objects can be found by scavenging the Commonwealth for issues of the Picket Fences magazine. Each one will unlock a different object for your workshop. Adds all the white Picket Fence pieces to the fence section of the settlement buildings.

Each settlement needs the numbers next to food and water to be higher than the number of settlers who live there. To increase your food supply, plant crops and assign settlers to manage them. For water, build a few water pumps or ? if the settlement is on the coast or contains a large puddle ? a water purifier.

I'd say Hangman's Alley is the most annoying. At least if you're trying to have a high population. Then again I haven't found all 30 settlements yet. Hangman's Alley is very difficult to support settlers in.

It helps, once you have settlements you can connect them with trade routes, this lets you store stuff in the workbenches that then becomes available at other settlements. You can also send out scavengers to collect junk. They're well worth having, plus you need somewhere to store inactive companions and power armour.

The advanced settlement structures are unlocked by meeting specific criteria: After completing the first quest in Automatron, you unlock the Robot Workbench. Picking up Fallout 4 magazines, such as Picket Fences and specific issues of the Wasteland Survival Guide.

Spectacle Island comes with the game's largest building area and, apparently, its highest built limit, meaning it's one of the most versatile locations going.
