Since 1990, the original list has been modified through rulemaking; two pollutants have been delisted, caprolactam in 1996 and methyl ethyl ketone in 2005. Then on January 5, 2022, 1-bromopropane was added. There are currently 188 federally regulated HAPs.

Emissions from various processes and operations at oil and natural gas facilities and natural gas transmission and storage facilities typically contain 5 different HAPs: benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, and mixed xylenes, and n-hexane.

There are 188 hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) that EPA is required to control. From these HAPs, EPA identified 30 that pose the greatest potential health threat in urban areas. These HAPs are referred to as the 30 urban air toxics.

Those stationary sources that emit more than 250 tons per year of a ?regulated pollutant? are required to obtain PSD permits and are subject to PSD increments. Those sources emitting more than 100 tons of PM10 per year are required to obtain Title V permits and pay annual emission fees.

Major source thresholds for ?hazardous air pollutants? (HAP) are 10 tons/year for a single HAP or 25 tons/year for any combination of HAP. The EPA generally has not required non-major sources to get permits (except as shown below).

Major sources are medium to large industrial facilities that emit 10 tons per year of any of a single HAP, or 25 tons per year of a combination of HAPs. These sources may release HAPs from equipment leaks, when materials are transferred from one location to another, or during discharge through emission stacks or vents.
