At the date a foreign currency transaction occurs, each asset, liability, revenue, expense, gain, or loss arising from the transaction is recorded in the functional currency of the recording entity using the exchange rate in effect at that date.

Currency translations use the exchange rate at the end of the reported period for assets and liabilities, the exchange rate on the date that income or an expense was recognized for the income statement, and a historical exchange rate at the date of entry to shareholder equity.

Furthermore, on initial recognition, a foreign currency transaction must be recorded in the reporting currency. Reporting currency is the currency that is used by the business entity to report its business transactions in the financial statements.

Application to lease accounting Since a lessee's lease liability is a monetary item, the liability is translated using a current exchange rate at the end of each reporting period and foreign exchange differences are recognised in profit or loss.

Currency prices are determined in two ways: fixed rates and floating rates. Fixed rates are pegged to a currency while floating rates move freely with market demand. Nations attempt to manipulate their currencies so that they remain strong and so that the demand for their currency is high in foreign exchange markets.

The liability to make lease payments is a monetary liability, and the right-of-use asset is a non- monetary asset.

All incentives for the agreement of a new or renewed operating lease should be recognised as an integral part of the net consideration agreed for the use of the leased asset, irrespective of the incentive's nature or form, or the timing of payments. [IFRS 16 para 81].
