Like the GMRA and GMSLA, the ISDA Master Agreement comprises a pre-printed form of agreement and a negotiated schedule. However, unlike the GMRA and GMSLA, the ISDA Master Agreement is not product-specific.

The calculation agent may be designated in the ISDA Schedule to cover all transactions entered into under the related ISDA Master Agreement (ISDA Master), or in an individual transaction confirmation for a single transaction. The calculation agent is often the bank or dealer counterparty to the transaction.

The ISDA Master Agreement is a 14-paragraph document. A schedule. The schedule is a portion of the ISDA agreement that allows parties to make amendments and implement negotiated terms into their unique agreement. These amendments can include capital thresholds for events, payment methods, and parties' additional terms.

It is possible to enter into OTC derivative trades without a signed ISDA Master Agreement and often when this happens the Confirmation will include an undertaking between the parties that an ISDA Master Agreement will be negotiated and signed within a 30, 60 or 90 day period.

Most multinational banks have ISDA Master Agreements in place with each other. These agreements usually cover all branches that are active in foreign exchange, interest rate, or options trading. Banks require corporate counterparties to sign an agreement to enter into swaps.

The GMRA contains a provision for a recipient of cash margin to pay interest on the cash to the paying party. The MRA does not contain a parallel provision, as this type of arrangement has not been the standard practice in the U.S. market.

GMRA is the acronym for the Global Master Repurchase Agreement. It is a model legal agreement designed for parties transacting repos and is published by the International Capital Market Association (ICMA), which is the body representing the cross-border bond and repo markets in Europe.
