Settlement currency is the currency a vendor selects to be paid out in and the currency in which funds are sent to the vendor's bank account. You can have one settlement currency or multiple, depending on the functionality of your payment processor and the availability of accounts.

For example, an investor wants to purchase 1,000 euros with Japanese yen. The exchange rate between these two currencies is 1 EUR to 130 JPY. Here, euros would be the transaction currency, and the Japanese yen would be the settlement currency.

For US dollars, the symbol '$' is sufficient abbreviation, unless there is a mixture of dollar currencies in the text. For other dollar currencies, '$' should be prefixed with the country abbreviation. For all other currencies, write the figure first followed by the currency name, for example, '100 million yuan'.

The standard settlement timeframe for foreign exchange spot transactions is T+2; i.e., two business days from the trade date. Notable exceptions are USD/CAD, USD/TRY, USD/PHP, USD/RUB, and offshore USD/KZT and offshore USD/PKR currency pairs, which settle at T+1. USD/COP settles T+0.

In Forex (FX) trading, the settlement currency (also referred to as payment currency) is the second currency listed in the currency pair description (example: EUR. USD). The transaction currency multiplied by the exchange rate will indicate the settlement currency amount for the transaction.

As an example of cross-currency settlement risk, consider a U.S. bank that purchases 10 million euros in the spot market at the exchange rate of EUR 1 = USD 1.12. This means that at settlement, the U.S. bank will remit US$11.2 million and, in exchange, will receive 10 million euros from the counterparty to this trade.

For example, suppose a foreign government has set 10 units of its currency equal to $1 in U.S. currency. To revalue, the government might change the rate to five units per dollar. This results in its currency being twice as expensive when compared to U.S. dollars than it was previously.
