For an individual, the order of initials is the first name, last name, and middle name. The last name initial (center) is larger than those on either side.

Generally, you use the first letter of your first and the first letter of your last name as your initials, but you can also include the first letter of your middle name or maiden name, or more than one letter from one of the names (e.g. someone with the last name DiAmico using both D and A).

Initials are the capital letters which begin each word of a name. For example, if your full name is Michael Dennis Stocks, your initials will be M. D. S.

There is no rule of the language about this; it's up to you. Generally, one would use in such a case either John Smith or J. Smith (or perhaps just Smith) rather than John S.

Standard usage in British English in the present day is to write initials alone, without full stops ('periods', for the Americans reading this) between them. It's usual to also omit spaces: Joe Devney > JD. Boris Johnson > BJ.

Any initials coming from a name (such as The W. A. Franke College of Business or J. L. Walkup) should have periods and a space between the two initials, just as the two names would have a space. All other acronyms should not have periods or spaces.

Traditionally, a monogram reads First Name Initial, Last Name Initial, Middle Name or Maiden Name Initial. With the Last Name Initial being the larger Middle Initial. For example, if you had the name Kelsie Elizabeth Vogds, her monogram would read KVE.
