It's generally not considered acceptable or professional to give your two weeks' notice via text message. Resigning from a job is an important step, and it's typically best to do it in a more formal and respectful manner.

It's absolutely not rude to resign over the phone. This isn't like a break-up, where you owe it to the other person to talk face-to-face.

I apologize for sending notice via text, but due to {reason for departure}, I've made the decision that this is the best way for me to resign. Please advise the best way for me to collect my final paycheck and remaining balance. I am grateful for the opportunity and appreciate all of your support during my time here.

Be upfront and polite about your decision. Give thanks for the opportunity and how it's helped you. But don't feel the need to over-explain. You can say something like: "I can't thank you enough for allowing me to grow my skills here, but, after much thought, I've decided it's time for me to move on.

An employee is unlikely to expect to receive his or her contract of employment as a text message, so when it comes to leaving the company it's right that something as serious as a resignation should be formalised in a written and signed letter.

You certainly could, but it's not recommended. If you're going to separate from your employer on good terms, you need to do it in person. Write a letter of resignation. Then, tell your boss that you're quitting, and then hand them the letter.
