In 1921, oil was discovered on Signal Hill, a city near the Port of Long Beach. These two discoveries are what made Los Angeles one of the world's major petroleum fields.

California's first drilled oil wells that produced crude to be refined and sold commercially were located on the North Fork of the Mattole River approximately three miles east of here. The old Union Mattole Oil Company made its first shipment of oil from here, to a San Francisco refinery, in June 1865.

In the 1940s and 1950s, as oil production boomed, parts of the city began to experience a major problem: it began to sink. As oil was pumped from beneath the beaches and coastal neighborhoods, parts of the city sank by as much as 25 feet, creating flooding hazards and large-scale property damage.

The region includes one of the largest urban oil fields in the country, with more than 5,000 active wells in LA County and more than 1,000 active or idle wells within city limits.

The four islands that comprise THUMS -- Grissom, White, Chaffee and Freeman, all named after NASA astronauts who died in training accidents -- are located about a mile offshore in Long Beach Harbor.

Although oil was originally discovered at Signal Hill in 1921, it wasn't until 1932 that the Wilmington Oil Field was discovered. In 1939, the City of Long Beach Harbor Department (Harbor Department) created a petroleum division and drilled the first well under the tidelands.

The City's legacy of oil production began in 1919 when oil was first discovered. The Long Beach Field is termed a mega giant field. It is the eighth-largest by cumulative production in California, and although now largely depleted, still officially retains around 5 million barrels of recoverable oil.
