FAQ

Bovine Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease of cattle. It is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium bovis (M. bovis) which can also infect and cause disease in many other mammals including humans, deer, goats, pigs, cats, dogs and badgers. In cattle, it is mainly a respiratory disease but clinical signs are rare.

Orange Markets provide farmers with a trading option for clear tested cattle from TB-restricted herds. Cattle moving to orange markets cannot not be reactors, unresolved inconclusive reactors (IRs) or direct contacts (DCs).

All farms are considered 'officially TB free (OTF)' unless you have been told otherwise, provided that you are up to date with routine testing and there is no reason to suspect TB infection in your cattle.

Auctioneers holding a market or collection of cattle for onward consignment to a slaughterhouse may wish to include cattle which, due to TB movement restrictions, cannot enter a regular market. These are called dedicated 'red' gatherings and must be approved by the Animal and Plant Health Agency ( APHA ).

Cattle can move from TB breakdown herds only under licences issued by Apha. Routes of sale when under restriction include to slaughter (either directly or via an approved slaughter gathering or collection centre), to approved finishing units (AFUs), to orange markets or to other restricted farms.

Usually, herds are restricted until they have completed two consecutive clear tests. The first test is carried out not less than 60 days after the removal, or isolation, of reactors from the herd. The next test is done not less than 60 days after the first test.

Details. Approved finishing units ( AFUs ) provide a route for beef producers to finish animals from both restricted and unrestricted farms. Pre-movement testing must be carried out on cattle from restricted farms within 90 days before they are moved to the AFU . AFUs with grazing must be tested every 90 days.

All cattle born since 1 January 1998 must be identified with a pair of Defra-approved ear tags and it is a requirement that all such cattle display at least one primary tag, plus either a second primary tag or a secondary tag in the other ear (double tagging).

All farms are considered 'officially TB free (OTF)' unless you have been told otherwise, provided that you are up to date with routine testing and there is no reason to suspect TB infection in your cattle.
